Early 18th century, modified from a bronze hilt smallsword of about 1700. The blade from a rapier of a few decades earlier. 13 3/4” length with 9 1/2” blade. Wood scabbard with hand stitched heavy leather covering, sheet brass throat mount and iron tip mount. Dagger and scabbard both with age deterioration. Made without a guard, this example was likely carried by a criminal and used in clandestine attacks, which strongly suggests the waterfront where much of the crime of the period occurred.
