Figure eight hilt with rolled quillon. Oval wood grip. The grip and hilt painted or pitch coated with brush marks evident. 29 3/8" narrow fullered wedge section blade with false edge struck with a makers mark at the forte. No other marks indicating its production for the civilian trade which included the crews of merchant ships and those of pirate and privateer vessels which preyed on them. The used of the figure eight form dates to the 1770's but the heavier proportions of this example were evidently inspired by the British 1804 pattern.
