Evidently a Confederate conversion. A private purchase militia officer’s sword of about 1840, as widely used by North and South, before the war. The stars and bars guard has been reversed to void the Northern association and the bone grip replaced with earlier spirally fluted leather covered grip for better purchase. 26 3/8” blade struck with maker’s name, only partly legible. Original brass mounted leather scabbard. Very good and better throughout. The grip lacks the wire wrap. Classic Confederate adaptation of what was at hand.
