Mid-19th century. Type associated with the river pirates who plagued the Yangtze River robbing merchant vessels traveling to and from the interior. 16" medially ridged slightly tapered d.e. blade. Reeded wood grip, the top pierced for a wrist thong to avoid its loss in close quarter fighting. Hilt and scabbard with brass mounts decorated with foliage, bats and mystical symbols. Brown hide or paper covered scabbard body shows light wear. Mounts excellent with good patina. Blade gray with a few small edge nicks. Sized for hand to hand fighting on ship board. Good old example.
