Classic ship wreak recovery. 17th century, the period when English, French and Spanish pirates controlled the Caribbean and Mexican costal waters, preying on colonial sailing ships transporting the treasures of the New World, to their home countries. 23 1/2" length, plus the tang, wrought iron with the pattern over evident due to salt water burial. The tang in better preservation owing to its wood grip, now perished. Purchased about 1980 from a dive shop/salvage/antique shop in the Myrtle Beach and Marco Island area. Along the edge of the parking lot lay about eight cannon, secure, as they were not easily moved, interest was low and just about everyone was honest. The down side of those carefree days is that find sites were considered irrelevant and largely undocumentable anyway. A true pirate or anti pirate of the Caribbean cutlass.
