19th century. Large example, 13 1/4" diameter with scalloped edge domed body mounted with seven domed bosses, each with large double star base. Decorated throughout with stylized foliage in various arrangements. Excellent with a little wear and good patina. The Batak are notorious for cannibalism which was practiced through the 19th century. Accounts are numerous and vary. The ears, nose, soles of the feet and palms of the hand are the most auspicious for human consumption. Some experts claim that parents were consumed when they could no longer work or maintain themselves.
