This rapier is from a group which incorporates pierced plates to fill a cup composed of petal shaped members. The combination provides a light hilt able to defend against both cut and thrust. The large proportions throughout result from that efficiency. Two related examples are illustrated in Rapiers, Valentine, 1968, #24 & #25. A further example is in the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum, #923.14.51. All are of exceptional proportions with thick thrusting blades. This example is signed in the deep fullers by the maker, CLEMEN COLL IN SOLINGEN.
Blade length: 42"
