Ex. Tower of London, from their 1960’s deaccession sales. 15 1/2" high rolled steel plate hand chiseled to shape. Punched for the shoulder strap lugs and the left arm with the start of a rolled edge. The surface in black pitch as found on finished armor. Partially complete and revealing the process frozen in time. Providing an insight to the armorer’s process perhaps otherwise unrecorded. This blank undoubtedly was produced during the English Civil Wars and unfinished when the need ended. It likely was blackened to preserve it in anticipation of renewed need. Evidently the only example among the thousands of items deaccessioned in those sales.
