Carved wood, 21 1/2 height. Characterful face with thick brows, inset shell eyes and broad smile. Small pointed Van Dyke beard. The arms carved away from the sides and delineated rib cage with breast bone protruding below. The back with high delineated spine. Fine glossy patina from handling. Known as moai kava kava, these figures are believed to represent ancestors and are specific to Easter Island. The decimation of the population for slavery, attendant disease, and total deforestation contributes to the extreme rarity of these figures. Second only to the legendary huge stone moai, the moai kava kava is truly the Holy Grail for the collector of Oceanic art!
