This charming rapier was produced during the period of political division which led up to the English Civil Wars of 1642-51. It is of the latest form which evolved from the swept-hilt and in structure, is of swept-hilt form with the elements proportioned to suit to the latest fighting techniques. The decoration employs portrait heads and masks, which on many examples are identifiably Charles I and Henrietta. In this instance, the portraits are ambiguous which allowed the owner to circulate comfortably among Parliamentarians while avoiding criticism from Royalists.
