19th century to about WWI. Oval, sheet iron, 19 1/2” height embossed with concentric beading. Fancy central gilt medallion and 8 gilt rosettes surrounding. Reverse with web arm bands. Surface tinned and oxidized with a couple small smooth rust spots. Could be brightened with fine steel wool if desired. Before radio and moving pictures, every city and town had one or more opera house presenting live performances using costumes and props such as this and the industry producing them was huge. Yet, so little has survived that, as a collecting field, it is nearly nonexistent.
