Wire bound leather covered grip. 28” straight blade decorated with historic figures representing father and family with foliage. The blade with uniform light pitting. Hilt excellent with the folding side guard now loose. A sword of the Knights of Pythias, the oldest chartered secret society in the US dating to the end of the Civil War. Organized in local “castles” it was opened to males in good health who believed in a supreme being. Maimed men, of which there were vast numbers resulting from the Civil War, were disqualified until 1875. Membership was achieved by secret vote of its members. Good early character and fine display.
