New England, 18th-19th century. 17 3/4” length, hand-carved of greenwood resulting in opened age crack. Thick grip and slightly flared butt with remnants of a wrist thong. Dark patina with age encrustation. Primitive protection in a society without police protection, with enormous character. Life at sea as well as the waterfront and in any environs populated by seamen was lawless with every man self-dependent for survival. The size of this example is indicative of an owner of considerable strength and stature.
