Colonial to Federal period. Oval, 2 1/2” length, rolled iron with tin plate. Used as a snuff container for farmers as well as to carry tinder as they are made to be virtually water proof. See Neumann p.242 and p.262. In the latter use, it was carried with a gun flint, iron flint striker and dry tinder to produce fire, even in wet conditions.
