Type which served the militias of the North and South going into the Civil War. See Peterson #11. Brass hilt with helmet form pommel. Flared straight cross guard with shield shaped langets noticeably lacking the popular stars & stripes infill, perhaps an expression of Southern perspective. One piece bone grip with a crack and a few checks as typical. 25 ¾” broad fullered d.e. blade with original glossy blue turned gray finish mostly intact. Most of the Northern and all of the Southern armies were made up of state militias going into the Civil War. This sword very possibly served in a Confederate militia.
