Unique example, made with the decorative details quaintly hand finished. Iron hilt with double shell guards, the right larger. Each with original plates with a circular (Sun?) motif flanked by pierced fields. The hilt elements quaintly delineated in the European taste. Brass wire wrapped grip with brass ferrules. 26 5/8” straight d.e. hand hammered blade with decorative dimple clusters in the European taste, otherwise, plain. The style of this sword would date it to about 1680-1700. However, typically, American styles followed by about a generation allowing for a 1700-20 date in this case. The workmanship is strictly provincial and probably the product of a local ironsmith more familiar with forging out fire place fittings and grease lamps. Charming.
