Mid-17th century. The cup hilted rapier reached its zenith in Spain in the 17th century and remained popular after it was superseded in other parts of Europe. This example represents what is popularly considered to be the finest achievement of the form. The deep hemispherical cup with its broad turned over edge is delicately pierced with scrolling foliage. The pommel is matching and it retains its original, rare, pierced iron grip. The 41 3/4" diamond section blade is inscribed CHRISTUS Imperat (Christ Rules) in the deep fullers.
