This heavy breastplate is from an armor which could have served on foot or horseback with interchangeable fauld and tassets. It is of exceptional size, custom made to fit a man of significant girth. A decorative pattern of deeply embossed lines adds strength and rigidity as well as aesthetic appeal. The blackened ground served to protect the iron from rust and provide a background for the decoration. In later "black and white" armors, the ground was recessed providing even greater strength without adding weight. This example precedes that style in its evolved form and may be considered a step in its evolution. 14 5/8" height.
