This fine weapon is directly related to the example illustrated in Rapiers, Valentine as #34. Each has a double thickened guard filled with plates of three interlocking circles pierced intricately in a matrix. The pommels are formed as turbans with deeply engraved foliage above and the knuckle bows, guard bars and quillon terminals are all embellished with turban form motifs. This example retains its massive copper wire and tape wrapped grip with iron turban form knots. The proportions of the grip provide excellent purchase for the four parallel finger grip. The blade is of fullered diamond section which lightens it to compensate for its extreme length which was demanded by the fencing techniques of the day. It is notable that the example, op cit, is identified as German, but possibly English, a possibility which must be considered in the case of this example.
Blade length: 43"
