19th century. 20" eight wave blade, finely forged with intricate root and curiously, with black fire scale finish. Clearly made and mounted that way as the overlaying silver retainers and hilt are unaffected. It seems likely that such finishes may have been more common, but are now lost to polishing by owners and collectors. Beautifully built up hilt with intricate gilt wire and disk base piece and three swelled segments forming finger stalls. Engraved silver band below the trefoil form ivory pommel. Further distinguishing this example is the bronze scabbard of Chinese workmanship decorated with geometrically incised bands surrounding fine silver inlays and 9kt gold hearts. The best we have ever offered.
