Italian C.1570, bottom plate from the left upper cannon (upper arm protection). Iron with rolled lower edge, roped in opposite directions from the center. The front vertical edge partially roped and depressed for the securing leather. The bottom border and three broad vertical bands finely etched and gilt (considerable gilt remaining in some areas) in foliage and dolphins curled to circles surrounding flowers. The etching is of the type and quality associated with the famed Milanese armorer, Pompeo della Chiesa and probably of his circle if not his workshop. Museum worthy.
