9 1/2" flattened hexagonal section blade of classic North Italian from with rectangular ricasso. Scroll terminal recurved brass guard. One piece tapered octagonal section grip with domed pommel. A charming provincial version of the commercially produced "hunting knives" which were worn by most Italians for defense in the streets in the 18th century. The vast majority of these have simple to elegant engraving to the blades, wire work inlay grips and capped pommels. This example impresses at first glance but is clearly a "poor cousin" on close inspection. In fact, commercial examples are fairly common while this example stands agonist them on its own. Good uniform condition for the period.
