Wood, 10 1/8” length formed as large clipped point fighting knife. Carved in relief throughout. The grip with the names of two ships, the captain and presumably, the sailor who carved it. The blade back with two additional names and each side of the blade with a reference to a voyage, ENGLAND OCT 3 1877 and AUKLAND JAN 1 1878. Wonderful patina throughout and exceptional character. This is a letter opener for sea mail which was folded on itself and the edge wax sealed, thus no envelope and nothing to cut. The thick blade was slipped in to break the wax seal.
