Custer era and showing distinctive Western Frontier character. 35 3/4" plated blade with M C Lilly, Columbus, Ohio maker's name, decorated both sides with foliage, eagle and US. Brass hilt of standard form, Peterson #86. Wire wrapped shark skin covered grip. The iron scabbard has had the suspension rings removed and the body covered with leather which would have had leather suspensions. The leather mostly gone but for both ends. Such a modification is a clear expression of individualism which was allowed in the West and for which Custer was famously known. The dark patina of the hilt, as well, exudes Western/cowboy character.
