Revolutionary War period, Neumann 8.PA dated 1770-86. Style superseded in 1792, though these were carried, particularly by militias, through the Napoleonic Wars. Have a pair, matching, each with axe blade etched with lovely large armorial B E H monogram. Original hafts cut to 82 1/2". The monogram identifies them as militia arms, serving one of the units organized by aristocratic lords. Militia units fought alongside British Regular Army and many distinguished themselves in the Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. The system preserved an appearance of independence for their royal or noble owners and they often carried weapon patterns unique to the units, though in this case, the arms are regulation pattern with the monogram only distinguishing them. These are the only examples so monogramed, that we have encountered. Each.
