Jacobite Rebellion Period. Large iron hilt with pierced panels and oval rein aperture. Japanned fish skin covered grip with scalloped brass ferrules and brass wire wrap. 35 1/4" broad and narrow fullered blade. This sword is of exceptional proportions, reflective of the stature of its owner. Scotts fought on foot utilizing the "Highland Charge" which evolved from clan warfare. The encounter distance dictated a blade length of about 32". A longer length was only advantageous to a fighter with proportional swing and reach, a combination that any Scott or British soldier hope not to meet! A very similar example, perhaps by the same maker is in the Scottish National Museum #LA33.
