From the William Fagan Ltd. Collection

This gun is from a well-known group of which 3 others are recorded. One is shown on the internet (Pinterest), another illustrated #217 & #218, Blades and Barrels by Frost and a third sold at auction in California in 1998. All four guns appear to mount identical locks but vary in detail otherwise including the brass sheathing of the stock, furniture and ramrods. The lock of this example is struck with a maker’s mark and bears a pseudo inscription. Three including this example have muzzles ringed in brass. This example descends from the legendary New Orleans arms dealer, Waldhorn & Co and still bears its descriptive cloth lined paper tag which reads “944 A combined pistol and saber. The pistol barrel is the handle of the saber.” The Frost example is identified as Burmese C.1855. The date seems accurate and the dha is considered the national sword of Burma, though it was used in neighboring countries. The blade form of these weapons is particularly associated with Burma and the workmanship and technology suggest an urban manufacturing center rather than rural hill tribe skills. Overall length, 29 5/8”. The blade is 16 7/8” in length and the gun is in excellent preservation throughout, probably having been collected near the turn of the 20th century as indicated by the type of tag attached. Waldhorn was established in 1881. Exceedingly rare.
