Mid-19th century. 13 1/4" length. Comprising a lead cylinder encased in braided leather forming a bludgeon which could be used with considerable force without producing permanent damage. Hand wound shank and expanded grip below the wrist thong. Entirely handmade and possibly on shipboard. Sound with wear and encrustation from age and use in humid atmospheres. Used to shanghai seamen to fill out crews, particularly for dangerous voyages as during the Civil War. Wonderful character.
