Iron, finely forged in three pieces with interlocking top links and a complex frame of one piece forming a thick curved back spine over a broad, relieved edge liner plate, the ends of both forming eyes for the links. Vikings were very active and aggressive slavers, raiding European Mediterranean coastal towns. They sold the captives in North Africa or retained them for their own use. It was typical for a Viking farm to have slaves and slave quarters. Identifiably important captives were often held for ransom. Exceptional example.
