Forged iron, 2 ½” length, straight measure. Barbed point. The shank end flattened as typical for Viking hooks. Forging iron was routine for Vikings and the line was more valuable than the hook. The line end was lashed to the flat shank terminal and was a weak point which, if overstressed, would fail, releasing the hook rather than breaking the line which may have been a hundred or more feet long.
