11th-13th century AD. Early Crusades period. 6 ½” length, fired terra cotta, of seashell form with ribbed elongated turnip form body. The top necked with broad conical terminal pierced with a filling/wick hole.  Thrown by hand as well as launched from catapults by Saracen defenders against the Crusaders.  While the composition of the incendiary fuel has never been discovered, the devastation caused by these early bombs is well documented in literature and art.
