Ex: John Woodman Higgins Armory. Forged iron, elegant form, made in one piece with a rolled edge and sunk border with rivets for the leather liner, now perished. Uniform light pitting to a glossy gray patina. The inside with old painted RW. Such markings were used to position elements of the arms and armor displays in manor houses and likely stands for “rear wall”. Those displays were sometimes removed for painting (which was needed frequently owing to candle lighting) and the markings helped workers remount them. Good early element displaying many aspects of armor construction and use.
