9th-10th century. 13 3/8" length, showing influence of its Frankish predecessors. Wedge section blade with long elegant dropped point. Much thinner than a work knife as this weapon was made strictly for cutting flesh. Long whittle tang to accommodate a bone, antler, or wood grip without a guard. As with all warriors, Vikings used weapons best suited to field conditions. The broadsword was most effective on the field and the short sword best suited for close quarters such as house raids. Slaving for trade and domestic use was a primary Viking activity. Related, was capture for ransom. This sword would have been the primary weapon used by a Viking warrior for village and house raids which fueled those activities. One of the two finest we have owned. The other now belongs to an NBA superstar!
