The Franks occupied territory which today is NE France, Belgium, southern Netherlands, and SW Germany. They served in the Roman Army from which their military tactics evolved. They fought on foot, hand to hand sword, shield, and axe. The axes were throw in unison forming the initial onslaught which perforated and broke the ranks of the enemy, allowing for penetration. This example is 5 ¼” in length and predates the curved Francisca by about a century. It dates to the period leading up to and including the reign of Charlemagne.
