Refurbished from an M1888 Lee Metford Mk1 bayonet. The hilt as issued. The double edge blade, dated ’07 with ordnance marks and Wilkinson Maker’s name, reduced to 8 3/8” length with a reshaped clipped point. That modification is fairly well known with information claiming both that the modifications were regulation (with no specifics) and field made. As the blade lengths vary, the latter is more likely. Trench warfare as conducted in WWI was unprecedented in history. The need for trench knives was immediately apparent but none supplied. Most Germans used civilian hunting knives. Other solutions, including trench-made knives and modification of bayonets as here, were employed by the Allies.
