Probably WWI. 30 1/4” s.e. broad fullered blade decorated 2/3 its length with patriotic and US naval motifs including vacant panel for owner’s name. Maker’s name, M C Lilly at the forte. Blade virtually mint condition. Gilt hilt of standard pattern with pierce guard with USN on foliage motif. Wire wrapped sharkskin covered grip. Hilt shows 99% gold overlay in fine aged tone. Original woven sword knot. Leather covered iron scabbard with three gold overlay mounts. Leather about 30% remaining. The mounts with fine patina matching the hilt. Hilt and mounts are fire gilt, a process largely abandoned even by WWI, owing to the accompanying mercury poisoning. Ages to a wonderful rich color. Superior quality and condition.
