Domed iron skull, of slightly oval form, 8 ¼” x 9 ½” with Fleurette top mount and forged iron ring. 14” mail fall of cylindrical from relieved for the shoulders with a tapered band centered in each. Frontal face opening with a tapered central drop. The mail comprised of alternate rows of solid/cylindrical links about 1.8mm width and riveted links. The fall attached to the helmet edge with larger butted links. A few short “tears” to the mail, negligible for the period with the borders/edges in good order. Brown oxidation patina throughout. See Die Karlsruher Turkenbeute (the collection of booty collected by William Ludwig von Baden-Baden after the defeat of the Turks at Vienna in 1683) #23 & #24, for two further examples. The booty from the Siege of Vienna was massive, thousands of wagon loads by some estimates so it may be concluded that any Ottoman weapons or armor from the period were likely spoils gathered after that decisive Ottoman defeat.
