US NAVAL CUTLASS

Pattern identified as the model 1860 (Peterson #53) though its exact date of adoption is not known due to ambiguity in government purchase records.  Patterned after the French model which had a steel hilt.  The vast majority were produced for Civil War use by the Ames company in 1862.  This example is early, pre Ames production.  Standard pattern throughout, but completely unmarked.  25 5/8 blade shows light gray surface patina.  Hilt excellent with soft patina to the brass guard and complete grip leather covering and wire wrap.  Brass hilt with two piece bowl guard and wire wrapped leather covered grip.  25 1/2 curved broad fullered s.e blade with original leather blade seat, unmarked.  Excellent throughout for service at sea with minor finger marks to the blade only.  Grip and hilt excellent.  Rare as only a small fraction of 1860 cutlasses predate the Ames contract and unmarked examples such as this have been spuriously identified as Confederate.
