Brass hilt with P form guard slotted for a knot.
Integral back strap and pommel. One
piece bone grip with alternating diced and chevron decorated bands. 31" curved broad fullered s.e blade decorated
first half with etched foliage, military trophies incorporating the stars and
bars and makers name on ribbon, A W SPIES. Spies retailed and perhaps manufactured
swords including the example corresponding to this one and identically
marked, illustrated as #99 in The
American Sword by Peterson. Blade is
very good for the period with a little minor black pitting at the point. The left side showing its faded blued scrolls
and the base both sides with some gilt remaining, strongest at the forte. Grip with
old small chips to the heel as
usually encountered. Guard excellent
with single small sword nick to the right langet. Dating to the territorial conflicts with
Mexico and
Canada and probably served through
the Civil War.
