56 1/2 width. Hinged two board top which makes an ideal platform for the display of helmets, armor or arms. See FURNITURE TREASURY by Wallace Nutting, the undisputed masterwork on American Colonial furniture, #16 for an American example dated to 1670 which matches in detail throughout. We will forward a copy of that picture to the purchaser or interested parties. The difference in dating is consistent with the style lapse from
England to
America. This example bears an old label to back Teetzler Co/Decorators/1000
Jefferson East/Detroit. Teetzler Co. is recorded at the
Jefferson address as late as 1930. This chest retains its original fine deep rich patina with a few repairs over the centuries including replacement of the hinges (perhaps in the 18th century), and internal braces to the underside of the top, probably early 20th century. All elements are original and homogenous and the till with original lid is intact. The left back of the top has a very well matched lineal repair along with a few other small inlays. All maintenance/repairs are consistent with is age and use and as expected. Coffers were used for the storage of valuable commodities including weapons.
