The Mollie Maguires-a subject about which there is still much controversy

After the Civil War, Irish coal miners in Pennsylvania fought the mine owners who failed to provide safe or decent working conditions.Working through a secret society, the Ancient Order of Hybernians, founded in the 18th century, they resorted to criminal acts including murder.By 1873, the Pinkerton Detective Agency had been hired to destroy the Molly Maguires and the miners union.Vigilante murders and criminal convictions resulted in the hanging of 19 Mollies in 1877. From our own collection is this original Ancient Order of Hybernians sword, based on the US M.1860 Staff and Field Officers sword with a large A O H. on the guard.The hilt otherwise matching.The 32 1/4" blade is longer and heavier, fit for a fight to the death in the event of an attack, many of which occurred.Well preserved with good patina.
