SPANISH RAPIER C.1660-80.

Brass hilt with symmetrical shell guards, each with thickened edges decorated with high relief addorsed elongated diamonds.  The guard bottom with a raised ring surrounding the blade root as found on Spanish cup hilt rapiers and left hand daggers of the period.  Swelled knuckle bow and inverted pear shaped pommel.  Fine wire wrapped grip of slightly full form in the Spanish taste.  30 1/4 diamond section blade with deep fuller inscribed EN TOLEDO each side.  Excellent throughout for the period with smooth finish and crisp inscription to the blade.  The rapier in its last true form (see Oakeshottp.245-6.).
