Few of us can own original old master paintings, but original prints of the great masters of three centuries are sometimes available at affordable prices. Samuel Prout was a painter and print maker who was the greatest master of architecture and cityscapes. He traveled and drew the cities of Europe, then transformed the drawings into stone lithographs from which prints were made. His impact was so great that he is credited in part with the Romantic Movement in Europe. Prouts work is displayed in the major museums of the world including the Tate Gallery, Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge), San Francisco Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), National Gallery in Washington to name a few. Today, Samuel Prouts work including his engravings, are widely reproduced and the reproductions are priced into the hundreds of dollars. The following are original stone lithographs by Prout printed in 1833 and so certified. They exude the charm of old Europe and the enthusiasm with which Prout saw it. In many, human subjects in interesting activities are emphasized with slightly more detail producing a fascinating juxtaposition of scale, texture and form. Each is worthy of a place in a major museum collection and a very proud original work of a major artist for any private collection. Each subject is about 11 1/4" x 16 1/4" and they are professionally mounted and matted in museum archival materials, ready to frame at 19" x 24".
