Made for a prince! RARE INDIAN ZAFAR TAKIEH. Concealed dagger arm rest used by Indian Kings and princes
when giving audience. See Stone page 683
and figure 873 # 4 which is nearly identical.
17th century from Tanjore, (capitol of Tamil Nadu and seat of the Chola
Empire). 22 1/2 height, the tapered
shaft covered in parchment with congealed/crackled surface with fine mottled
age patina. Silver base mount. Silver locking joint which supports the
carved wood arm rest with carved parrot head terminals as with the Stone
example. The socket opens to present a
13 3/4 concealed blade of heavy tapered section with expanded ricasso. The Stone example is mounted with a European
rapier blade (shortened). This example
has either a European blade (perhaps from a Portuguese main gauche) or Indian
copy. Indian copies of European blades
were common, particularly in the South.

Condition commensurate with it age and use. The Stone example is in the collection of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art and this is the only example in private hands that
know of.
