28 1/4" blade decorated with foliage, owner's name and Worcester Co Commandery. Maker's name Gaylord Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass to the base. Gaylord made 1860 Staff & Field Officer's swords as well as fraternal swords and is recorded about 1860-80. Hilt with two piece scale ebony grips mounted with enameled cross. Chain guard lacking. Brass mounted scabbard with hand engraved mounts including the locket with cross and IN HOC SIGNO VINCES motto. Blade bright. Hilt and scabbard with uniform evidence of careful use and age. The blade curiously with acutely angled point to reduce the danger of accidental stabbing, suggesting that this example may have been used in the secret initiation rituals practiced at the time.
