18th century. Each forged with a large eye terminal. Iron cross bar made from the base piece of a spear with the socket flattened and folded. The opposite end forged flat and pierced for attachment of a lock or chain. These would prevent the captive from walking and were used on slave ships and in the markets to immobilize slaves. 15 1/2 width. Minor rusting consistent with its age. See Transatlantic Slavery, fig.90.
