MEDIEVAL JAPANESE BULLETS.

Item Number: sep900
The Japanese
embraced firearms technology cautiously after Portuguese sailors
introduced firearms in 1542. During those turbulent years in which the
Muromachi shogunate was displaced by the Momoyama shogunate, firearms
of every scale evolved and Japanese castle architecture was
revolutionized in response to the threat of cannon. The following are
from a cache of very rare unfired projectiles of the second half of the
16th century. While some matchlocks remain, they nearly all date to the
later Edo period. We know of no other Japanese projectiles from this
early period.
16th
century Japanese cannon shot. About 7/8 diameter. Cast iron with the
seam exaggerated by chamfering the mold to provide a vicious medial
cutting band. Used in clusters like western canister shot. Have four
examples. Each.......$45
