MAYAN PAGAN RITUAL EFFIGY
|
|
Item Number: 10-365
The Mayan Indians of
the Yucatan lived in near total isolation until the mid 20th century
practicing a religion which blended Christianity with Pagan rituals
descended from their ancient religion which included human sacrifice.
One practice which evolved was the ritual killing of an enemy by
stoning a pottery likeness. This example dates to the colonial period,
19th century or earlier and was preserved intact, either not used or
lost in the mud before it could be damaged. 7 3/4 high. It represents
an elderly man seated, clutching his legs in a position of submission.
It has a charming folk character including the resigned expression of
the face. Undamaged, it has light surface encrustation from burial, a
little more prominent on the back and original soil adherence in the
internal cavity. One of just two we have encountered.
