|
Item Number: 09-507
What Budge was in the the academic arena, Petrie was in the field. The Indiana Jones character captures some of Petrie's persona and indeed, Jones mentions Flinders Petrie in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie first traveled to Egypt in 1880 at age 27. He applied self taught scientific methods which evolved from his study of British monuments including Stonehenge, to the Great Pyramid at Giza dispelling existent theories about its construction. He went on to excavate many of the most important sites in Egypt employing shallow layer excavation and recording which revolutionized archaeology. This item was given by Flinders Petrie to Luxmore Newcombe, Librarian at University College, London and author of Library Cooperation in the British Isles.
XXVI dynasty, 664-550 B.C. 7 3/8 height. Mummy form with arms crossed at the waist and desert hood. Carved wood, unusually detailed in black ink including a column of heiroglyphics. Good patina with the ink a little faded but very clear.
