COLONIAL AMERICAN HORSEMANS SWORD.
Item Number: 10-38
Form based on the English infantry swords of the period with faceted urn form pommel, flattened knuckle bow, bulbous quillon terminal and double shell guard with incised line border. Dark wood grip with deep age patina, shows no evidence of ever having been covered or wrapped. Hilt and grip show fine uniform patina throughout with frosty surface oxidation. Good storage condition with original detail and edges intact, and no degradation from cleaning. 33 flattened diamond section straight d.e. blade with * 1742* each side along with chiseled animal mark. Sword blades were imported from England as well as the continent. Colonial made swords more commonly used imported rather than American made blades. This blade could be American with the figure, an attempt to emulate the English running fox. The date accords precisely and should be considered the date of production of the sword. A fine French & Indian War period sword, much rarer than Revolutionary War examples.
